The new discussions with the unions will undoubtedly build on the solid foundations we have established in previous agreements and strengthen our culture of advice and cooperation so that UniSA can deliver on our promise to our students and achieve our strategy as an Australian business university. We are now at a meeting #15 after a short pause in discussions until October to prepare the points on which we agree in principle. Some enterprise agreements offer an alternative to the salaries and conditions set by the award. Others refer to certain attribution conditions and set other conditions. While UniSA was in contact with its employees, students and the community regarding the strategic future, the negotiation teams of UniSA, NTEU and CPSU continued our productive negotiations. An enterprise agreement sets out the conditions of employment of workers covered by the agreement. It is negotiated through a premium security network to help employers and workers define working conditions that will support their needs. SAET may also reconcile or give instructions when parties are working to negotiate an agreement. At the first meeting on 22 March, we discussed the minutes and then agreed on minutes to conduct our negotiations on business. These protocols are based on the previous business bargaining process, conducted in 2013/2014, and are based on positive and constructive relationships and the process between the university and the unions. We also agreed to meet in the coming months and alternate the chair of the meetings between the parties. We are committed to positive and productive discussions in good faith with unions and strive to reach an agreement as effective as possible within a reasonable time frame that meets our mutual needs.

There are still a number of important issues to be resolved, including wages, but we look forward to working constructively with the unions to bring all elements of our negotiations to a robust and modern agreement for the University of South Australia. Our mutual consideration of the collective agreement was supported by the focus on communications that could complement the agreement by highlighting commitments or expectations, for example by ensuring that staff and students are aware of the University`s obligations regarding Aboriginal employment, inclusive education and our reconciliation action plan. A party to an enterprise agreement may apply for authorization, registration or employment with SAET. At our last meeting on April 5, the NTEU presented an overview of its disaster report and the university outlined its key priorities for a new enterprise agreement. The university also provided an overview of the significant funding challenges we face in light of the changes announced by the Commonwealth government in December 2017.
